When Sun enters the zodiac sign of Capricorn, it is Uttarayan ie Sun moves into the northern hemisphere. 

This is the beginning of an auspicious time according to the Hindu calender as the month of Adhik mass has passed.

In Mahabharat, Bhisham Pitahma had waited for uttarayan to come, to leave his mortal body as it is believed that souls go to swarag in Uttarayan.

What to do on this day-

This is a day for prayers and charity, as any good deed done this day multiplies hundred times.

Chanting or listening to Vishnu Sahastranaam is very very auspicious as it a Maha puja along with being a complete Nav Graha Puja. This will give you peace and prosperity for the entire year.

Donating wheat (Equal to your body weight), jaggery, til and desi ghee (As per your wish) to a brahmin is very good.

Ladoos of til can be distributed to the workers who work to earn their living eg construction workers , drivers, servants etc.

Sweets made of til and jaggery can be given to beggars or poor people too.

The enire day is for prayers and charity only and if you that, you are assured of a good start to a new year.
